I'm Still Here

My apologies for the lack of blog posting recently. I promised myself when I started this blog of breeziness that I wouldn't disappear for extended periods of time and then return with a "sorry for the lack of posts" post and yet, here I am. My absence hasn't been for a lack of material but rather for a lack of time and energy. So in an attempt to put forth minimal time and energy yet also entice you to return to the blog soon here are a few of the events that have recently happened or will be happening in the next few days that will serve as breezy blog material:
  • How to set a squirrel trap in your attic and (hopefully) trap an intruding squirrel.
  • A day-o-fun on an all day office trip that includes the following: a bus, boxed wine, team building activities, and the movie Hoosiers.
  • The day I broke the law, got kicked off the light rail and lived to tell about it.
  • What does "evening casual attire" mean to you? To me it means confusion.
  • The Neti Pot: It's gross and a very unpleasant experience but it totally works, well done Oprah.
  • And finally, congratulations to the happy couple; if you haven't heard Molly and Jason are engaged. Here's to second place - I mean chances, second chances!
Stay tuned for details and explanations...

Break Out Your Pleated Khaki Pants!

It's official: Ken - I mean Jake - has been confirmed as the next Bachelor. Doesn't Jake look exactly like Barbie's Ken in this photo? I think the resemblance is a little eerie. I can't tell for sure but it appears that he could be wearing his pilot wings pin with his suit in this photo which led me to think of a genius idea. Show of hands - who thinks Jake should give pilot wings instead of roses this year? Then we could call it a wing ceremony and Jake can say things like, "These women are angels and I have the opportunity to give them their wings." And at the wing ceremony before Jake gives out the last pin Chris Harrison would enter to announce, "Ladies, Jake...this is the final wing pin tonight." And after all the wings were handed out Chris would come back in the room and say, "Ladies if you did not receive your wings tonight please take a moment and say your good-byes." And then on the first one-on-one date Bette Midler would appear to serenade the couple with her 1989 hit song You are the Wind Beneath my Wings. Who's with me!?

True or False: Perfect Pilot for Bachelor?

Breaking News! Lincee from I Hate Green Beans is reporting that Jake the pilot and wearer of pleated khaki pants is on tap to be the next Bachelor. This lead me to perform a little google search of my own and this article popped up which says that the next Bachelor will be announced on Dancing With The Stars on October 13th. The article also claims that Kiptyn and Reid are other possible candidates although you'll have to trust me that I have it on good authority it will sadly not be Reid.

More evidence that Jake is the next Bachelor is found in this article on US Weekly. Apparently a woman from Tennessee who is - get this - a learjet pilot (I wonder why she got picked?) states that Jake is the next Bachelor and she is one of the bachelorettes who will be competing for/"dating" Jake. She goes on to say that she probably won't find true love with Jake because they'd never see each other. I would add that she probably won't find true love with Jake because it's only happened once in nineteen tries on the dynasty that is The Bachelor/ette. ABC is not confirming anything so again, it's not a concrete.

If it is not a rumor that Jake is the pick then it leaves me with mixed feelings. Jake is so over-the-top cheese that sometimes his actions and words make me want to throw up a little in my mouth which will make for quite the nauseating season. However if I can learn to stomach the cheese then Jake as The Bachelor could lead to quality entertainment in the "I'm laughing at you, not with you" category (i.e. The Hills category, I know it sounds cruel but really it's all in fun). Plus I'm already thinking of all sorts of contests to play at viewing parties...Guess how many girls Jake will pull the lurch kiss on in the middle of her sentence? How many times will Jake use exaggerated or dated adjectives such as 'amazing', 'fantastic', and 'neat'? How many times will we hear Jake tell us he is perfect and in an ironic twist his perfection is also his one and only flaw in this world full of imperfect people? How many times will Jake lean over a balcony rail crying a la 'Mesnick'?

And finally, guess how many times Jake will make this half-smile "I'm conflicted" face?:

I would say that these topics could also be used for a drinking game (i.e. drink when Jake wears pleated khakis), but I'm afraid that would lead us to be intoxicated within the first 30 minutes of every show...and I don't host those kinds of parties. So the countdown is on friends, 6 days until the Bachelor is revealed and approximately 2.5 months until we get to view his quest for true love and all the wonderfully awkward moments that come with it.

*Note to readers, I am taking a break from blogging about the Sooners and therefore will not speak about our latest loss because it seems like every time I do we lose the following Sunday. Not saying I'm superstitious; just a little stitious. And let it be known I still love my team and the stache...and I will name my first child Sam Bradford.

Fear the 'Stache!

With Sam Bradford still out due to the terrible week one injury, his replacement Landry Jones has received a great deal of attention. This attention has been gained not only for his quality of play, but also because he sports a labia sebucula (Latin for "lip sweater"). When I first saw Landry's face on the ginormous Cowboy's stadium screen I admit I was taken aback at the sight of the mustache. In my opinion a mustache is an awfully difficult look to successfully pull off and I wasn't really feelin' it for Landry. However, since that first game (hereinafter to be referred to as TGTMNBM: the game that must not be mentioned) my respect for Landry has grown. Of course the easiest way to gain my coveted respect as an OU football player is to play really well, which he has done. It also helps that I always think of the lovable Friday Night Lights character Landry Clarke or the great Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry whenever hearing his name (nice name associations for me). And the third reason that I have come to accept - and dare I say love the mustache sported by Landry is because of my love for the blog Pop Candy and my genuine belief that I would be friends with the author Whitney Matheson should we ever be given the opportunity to meet. (I also think I would be friends with Jenna Fischer, is that weird?) Whitney loves mustaches (among other things) and writes about them frequently which in turn makes me want to love mustaches and write about them frequently.

I think Whitney would be happy to learn that the American Mustache Institute (AMI) has recognized Landry for his growth of facial hair. This fabulous article titled The Case for Landry had me grinning from start to finish as they honored his determination to keep growing despite pressure to shave it from critics and teammates. Also exciting for Landry is the support he has received from OU students. Supporters came to the last home game sporting fake mustaches and T-shirts that said, "Fear the Stache" and "Mustache Mafia." Landry's response? "I'm excited about it," Jones said, "I'm going to try and get the stachers organized." Stachers...love it!

My love for the AMI grew immensely when I read another article here scorning Colt McCoy (Or Mule McCoy as they say) for shaving his mustache after the first game of the season. I guess he couldn't handle all the haters. I can't help but think that Landry's self-confidence to go against the grain and not change a changeable physical trait that is socially unacceptable by the mainstream has to translate into confidence in who he is as a football player. I know it might be considered a stretch to use a mustache as a metaphor for confidence on the football field, but if so I'm stretching because I think there really could be a correlation. Either that or it's so distracting that the other team is caught off guard a la 'Single Ladies' Glee Style:

When all is said and done however let's be honest - the mustache is not what makes or breaks the man at OU, his ability to win is what will always be the most important thing for an OU quarterback. Heck, he can grow a Fu Manchu for all I care if he beats Texas (should Sam not be able to play). I can see it now..."Fear the Fu!"

**The AMI article on Landry is so great that I'm copying and pasting it below for those of you who don't have access to the links included in the blog. I'm also putting my favorite parts in bold. Boomer Sooner!

THE CASE FOR LANDRY JONES
Going into this college football season, there were three prohibitive favorites to win the Heisman Trophy, and all were quarterbacks: Florida Gators FOJ (Friend of Jesus) Tim Tebow, the Texas Longhorns' Pony McCoy, and last year's winner, Sam Bradford of Oklahoma.

The stage was set for a solid, season long Heisman race between the three until BYU linebacking Mormon Coleby Clawson, in the first game of the season, drove Bradford into the ground with a crushing hit that injured Bradford's shoulder.

And while all Bradford could do was stand helplessly on the sideline and watch his team ultimately fall to the Slingin' Bigamists, even in defeat, a hero as born.

Enter Landry Jones, Mustached American.

Certainly it wasn't the redshirt freshman's paltry 6 of 12 completions or his 51 yards that earned him hero status. It was, quite simply, his lower nose accoutrement delicately scattered across his upper lip.

As we conveyed yesterday to Jake Trotter of the Oklahoman, unlike Mule McCoy, who shamefully shaved his labia sebucula (Latin for "lip sweater) a few weeks ago -- ruining both his Heisman and national championship hopes -- Jones has proven to be a true descendant of Mustached American stock with the power and grit of Chuck Norris riding atop an silver back gorilla on acid.

He might not be a Heisman candidate, but certainly should garner consideration for the Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached American of the Year honor.

Indeed, Jones wears his mouth brow with power and wisdom, and as he progresses through the season and capably fills in for Bradford -- who suffers from Bare Upper Lip Disorder (BULD) -- we know that he will not only yet again prove that there is no greater performance enhancer than the mustache, but he will represent people of Mustached American descent with a strong resolve, great athleticism, quick thinking, and of course, good looks.

Carry on.

Jim & Pam Forever

Emily Blunt gets him in real life, Jenna Fischer gets him in TV life...so many women to be jealous of - I mean happy for. I'll be picking up a copy of this week's Entertainment Weekly:

There's also three videos on the EW site that are well worth your 3 minutes to watch, click here, here, and here for each of them. I really am happy that Jim & Pam are actually getting married. After so many shows in the past have beat the "will they or won't they" couples story line to death I am glad that this show is firmly saying "they will and we're moving on". I still remember watching that Poker Night episode when Jim finally confessed his feelings for Pam and then it ended with the infamous kiss. I screamed, the girls watching with me screamed, the boys watching with me were scared. Then we all had a moral debate over whether Jim should have kissed Pam since she was engaged. That's what we do. And for the record, I was firmly on the side of "Pam's not married yet, Roy is a jerk, and Jim and Pam are clearly soul mates so the kiss was completely acceptable." And look where they are now! Excuse me while I go watch this video to relive the greatness...

Update: I'm Watching Glee

I'm not ashamed to say that last Wednesday after work I finally watched the first 2 episodes of Glee that had been waiting for me on my DVR...and then after that hour and a half I proceeded to watch the 3rd episode in real time. That's right - 2.5 hours of the same show in one sitting. I know most of you are likely thinking "She has way too much time on her hands," but I can assure that I would only sacrifice 2.5 hours of my life for a quality television program...unless there was a marathon of The Hills or something like that on (don't judge, it's too easy to get sucked into that black hole of reality TV). Here are my two favorite clips from the most recent Glee episode, although after watching them back I think they are better when you watch them in context with the whole episode so that's what I would recommend. I promise I won't link to videos every Wednesday...

It's The Most Wonderful Time of The Year

The signs are clear my friends: the weather is cooler, college football has started, and Christmas decorations are for sale at Walmart; yes, the season of Fall is upon us. This is an exciting time not only because of college football but also because it means new TV shows are back!! While I'm looking forward to catching up with old favorites such as The Office and 30 Rock I also have high expectations for the new show Community. I actually laughed out loud several times when I watched the trailer which is a good sign. The trailer is below if you haven't already seen it and a good review of the show is here.

Another show I'm planning to watch but just haven't found the time yet is Glee. I've had several friends say that it's great and it's received good reviews so I intend to give it a chance. The first two episodes are on my DVR so hopefully I can watch those before I get too far behind. Here's the trailer if you haven't seen it...catchy songs.

There really haven't been any other new shows that have peaked my interest. I did watch The Jay Leno Show on Monday night mainly to see what Kanye West was going to say after the VMA incident and also because Jerry Seinfeld was the guest. It was basically a total knock-off of The Tonight Show. I think the only difference was Jay wasn't behind a desk which actually made me think it looked more like Oprah once they sat down. And then to further affirm that feeling Oprah appeared! It was confusing and awkward and I think the only way I will watch again is if there is a guest I want to see or if there is nothing else on. In which case I should probably just turn the TV off and read a book...or watch one of these other shows already taking up space on my DVR! Because I'm sure you're curious what takes up most of our DVR space, here are my thoughts on some different shows I'm currently watching:

Mad Men - Loooove it, each episode gets better and I really love reading these recaps too. Peggy Olson has been my favorite character this season although I am missing Joan, she hasn't had nearly the screen time she's had in past seasons.

Top Chef - I started watching Top Chef Masters when it was on a few months ago and was totally surprised that I enjoyed it. I mean it's a show about cooking and my version of cooking involves a frozen meal and a microwave. I assumed the fact that OU graduate Rick Bayless won the honor of Top Chef Master may have had something to do with my interest. Yet, when the non-master version of Top Chef started I decided to give it a chance and now I'm hooked! It has even inspired me to try to cook more. Of course on my first attempt to make homemade guacamole I cut into the jalapeno and immediately began cursing at the pain my fingers experienced from the juice. And then when I cut into the avocados I discovered the importance of making sure an avocado is ripe before you plan to eat it. Awesome. Anyway, Jen & Kevin are my favorites and I'm sure when they started cooking they made rookie mistakes too, right?

Project Runway - For some reason this season has been pretty boring to me so far. I think the challenges are uninspired and Michael Kors (my favorite judge) has only been present for one out of the three episodes. I do think that the right person has gone home each time (Seriously how did Mitchell even make this season??) and I hope that as it gets down to the truly talented people it starts to get more exciting for me. My current favorites are Carol Hannah and Shirin (yay for Richardson, TX!)

Biggest Loser - In the past this is a show that I've watched once it gets down to about 5 contestants because what I really love about it is seeing the transformations and the episodes seem to drag. I think this could be solved if they made it a one hour show instead of two, but no one asked me. However I admit that if I watch an episode long enough it usually makes me cry. Case in point, last night I watched the first hour of the premiere and teared up a few times. This season is about second chances and hearing each person's story was actually really touching. The contestants this season have been through a lot and because their stories are so intriguing I think I might find myself watching more often than I have in the past. No favorites yet although Abby's story was the one that brought the tears.

And I think that's it...as if there would be room for more, right!? I'm starting to think that I might need to get a new hobby that doesn't involve television. Until then, happy premiere week everyone!
