The countdown is on friends!! Only 1 more day until the much anticipated Oklahoma Sooners opening game of the 2009-2010 season! I am once again getting my high hopes up for this to be THE season we win it all! The season that must not be named is in the past and I've moved on as I'm sure my Sooners have as well. Sam is back (PTL!) and as Coach Stoops said in an interview he's only gotten better during the off-season.Click here if you would like to see a video that illustrates how fun the Oklahoma Sooner football team is. :) I love this video - it reminds me of Friday Night Lights, I could totally see Coach Taylor getting in the dunk tank, can't you fellow FNL fans?
I'm aware not everyone who reads this blog is a Sooner fan or for that matter even knows what a Sooner is. During my time in Charlotte I've had to give the definition for a Sooner more than once. You can click here for a full description but basically it is a person who claimed land either legally or illegally in Oklahoma prior to the official land rush. While some people may claim that means a Sooner is a cheater, I prefer to not use that term and instead think of it as a person who is creatively getting ahead. It's also important to note that some Sooners were legally allowed to enter the state prior to the official start so the words 'Sooner' and 'cheater' are not accurate synonyms.
If you would prefer a visual definition of what a Sooner is I recommend watching the end of Far and Away - the 1992 hit movie staring Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. You can click here to see the ending; the people in the part from 1:18 to 1:58 would be called Sooners. Spoiler alert: this clip is the last ten minutes of the movie so if you were planning to put it in your Netflix queue watching the clip might ruin the experience for you.
Just for fun and to get everyone pumped up for the season click below to watch one of my all-time favorite moments I've ever witnessed at an OU game. Note it was the 4th quarter, 2 minutes left, we were only winning by 4 points and then this happened:
Boomer Sooner!!
